Face Balm: What It Is & How It Works

One of our favorite products is a face balm. This rich, luxurious facial treatment can help you restore your skin radiance when used just once or twice daily.

We’ll explain what a face balm is, what it can do, and who should use it.

What Is Face Balm?

A face balm is the thickest type of moisturizer. Used for healing properties and to help soothe stressed, irritated skin, it has a heavier weight than a lotion or cream and can be used on all skin types

Different face balms are intended to address different skin concerns, promote healthier skin, and increase hydration and moisture levels.

Face balm is similar to moisturizers, but there’s a key difference. Lotions and creams are typically water-based products. A balm’s first ingredient is generally oil or wax. If that sounds a little heavy, remember just because it’s thicker doesn’t mean it won’t absorb easily or feel comfortable on your skin.

The key to a great face balm is in the ingredients.

What Are Common Ingredients in a Face Balm?

Usually, face balm includes a combination of oils and waxes. Traditional skincare options may feature synthetic oils and petroleum-based waxes. Unfortunately, these aren’t the best options for skin. In fact, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) gives petroleum a dangerous “4” rating because it is so problematic.

A by-product of coal mining, petroleum is a known carcinogen and not appropriate for skin care products. In addition, it doesn’t offer your skin any good benefits.

What About Oils?

Traditional skincare products may feature mineral oil, another byproduct of coal mining and a cousin of petroleum. They may also include animal-based oils like lanolin (derived from sheep’s wool) or squalene (taken from shark livers). These ingredients aren’t cruelty-free and aren’t actually good for your skin.

Better Ingredients for Better Results

A high-grade face balm will contain ingredients that work better and do better.

Furtuna Skin believes in the power of nature, and we also believe nature is to be respected. As such, you’ll never find animal products or byproducts in our formulas, but what you will find are ingredients that outperform traditional skincare counterparts. We include some of the very best, most potent ingredients in our Furtuna Skin Replenishing Balm.

Formulated with our exclusive wild-foraged Replenishing Complex, an ancient medicinal flower blend hand-harvested from our organic farm, our balm is designed to use on any skin type.

A powerful blend of plant botanicals and seed oils, our Replenishing Balm contains phytoceramides, antioxidants, nutrients, and vitamins to help your skin barrier retain moisture. Natural ingredients work together in synchrony to help give your skin what it needs to radiate its natural beauty and health.

What Do Face Balms Do?

An excellent face balm can cover a myriad of skin concerns. Here’s what you can expect when you use one regularly.

Increase Hydration and Moisture

Sometimes your daily moisturizer isn’t enough. Face balms come in to seal the deal by providing a deeper level of intense hydration that keeps your skin quenched longer than a moisturizer alone. Our Face Balm strengthens the skin barrier to lock in moisture and help skin retain moisture overtime.

Provide Antioxidant Protection

Skin gets stressed by daily environmental factors that cause your skin to lose its luster and radiance. Dull and uneven skin tone are signs your skin might be suffering from free radical damage.

Free radicals are unbalanced molecules that come from sources like:

  • The sun

  • Pollution

  • Cigarette smoke

  • Some household cleaning products

These free radicals attack healthy cells and cause damage that can look like dullness, dark spots, areas of hyperpigmentation, rough patches, and fine lines and wrinkles. To protect your skin, you need antioxidants.

Antioxidants work to protect your skin cells from the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Like tiny shields, they guard your cells, keeping them safe. Good news — our Replenishing Balm is packed with ingredients that boast a higher antioxidant load than vitamins C or E.

Offer Soothing Comfort

Irritated, red, itchy skin can be frustrating. It’s hard to find the source of the problem, and some products designed to treat these issues can cause more stress on your skin.

The Extra Virgin Olive Oil and natural, plant-based ingredients you’ll find in our Replenishing Balm contain anti-inflammatories and soothing properties to help fight redness and irritation and keep skin calm.

Who Should Use Face Balm?

Contrary to popular belief, face balms aren’t just for people who have dry skin, although they work fantastically well to restore moisture levels and alleviate the symptoms of dryness. Anyone (read: any skin type) can get amazing benefits by using a high-grade face balm with the highest quality ingredients.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin often feels impossible to care for. No matter what you use, you develop irritation. It can also be intimidating to try a new product with ingredients that are new to you. That’s why Furtuna Skin makes it our mission to educate you about our ingredients and be completely transparent in our process.

Our ingredients are so close to their natural state, they retain a deeper concentration of phytochemicals and nourishing vitamins and minerals that they work wonderfully with even the most sensitive skin types.

Instead of fitting an ingredient into our product, we formulate a product around the ingredients, letting them work together synergistically to benefit your skin. The result is plant botanicals that are soothing, restorative, and powerfully effective while remaining safe for sensitive skin types.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you’ve probably been told to avoid products that contain oil. That’s bad advice. In fact, oily skin is often a symptom of dehydrated skin. When skin becomes dehydrated, sebaceous glands begin working overtime to correct the problem by producing even more oil.

If you’re using oil-free, drying products to correct your oiliness, you could be spinning your wheels and making your oily situation even oilier. A solution? Plant-based oils work with your skin’s natural moisture levels to promote balance.

Pure, single-origin, organic extra virgin olive oil, like the kind included in all our products, works to bring skin moisture levels back into homeostasis. By absorbing excess oil in spots like your t-zone and deeply hydrating areas that are drier, you’ll find your skin is less oily…all by using products that contain oil.

Blemish Prone

Blemish-prone skin can cause painful blemishes cropping up at the most inopportune times in the most inopportune places (hello, pimple on the nose). The problem is that most products marketed to treat blemishes are harsh and drying and can even cause you to develop more bumps.

Using a gentle, plant-based face balm on areas you most frequently experience breakouts can help soothe skin, hydrate it, and help encourage more clarified skin. Our Replenishing Balm repair damage caused by blemishes and harsh acne treatments and strengthens depleted skin barrier to prevent future bacteria growth.

Aging Skin

As we age, our skin changes. Collagen production slows, which can cause our skin to look less youthful and plump. In addition, our sebaceous glands begin producing less oil, which means the skin is overall drier and more prone to developing fine lines and deep wrinkles.

Using a face balm with antioxidants, like ours, and plant botanicals that work strategically to target cell regeneration can help slow the clock. Our wildcrafted blend of plants includes wild-organic hawthorn, St. John’s Wort, and spirulina, all of which help stimulate cell renewal for skin to look and feel younger.

Sun Damaged Skin

Too much sun can cause your skin to be sensitive, and your regular products may feel like they burn when you apply them. Treat your skin to a healing face balm when you forget your sunscreen and get too much sun exposure. Face balm helps hydrate your skin and soothe it, taking the sting out of the sunburn and helping restore your skin’s health.

Forget the Lotion. Grab a Balm!

A face balm is your go-to for the ultimate in hydrating, restorative care. With ingredients that help protect your skin, deeply nourish it, and restore its vitality, a face balm can help skin thrive.

At Furtuna Skin, our products focus on powerful ingredients that are sustainable, cruelty-free, and organic and outperform traditional beauty counterparts. Our obsessiveness over incredible ingredients is what makes our products suitable for any and every skin type at any and every age.
