SOME OF OUR REGENERATIVE FARMING PRACTICES:

WILD FORAGING

Harvesting is done by hand with great attention paid to preserving the plant itself and the plants of the community. During a harvest, plants are not damaged, and roots are not eradicated, so these botanicals can continue to live naturally at their highest potency. A lot of work on the farm is done by hand, from foraging to planting which strengthens the plants, and the workforce.

SOIL PRESERVATION

The land and the surrounding hundred miles is 100% free of pesticides. We reuse the processing waste from the mill as a fertilizer. Our ground olives are a soil conditioner, and a key part of the agronomic utilization of vegetation water and pomace. The land has not been touched for more than 400 years, so the growing plants are exceptionally nutritious.

CROP DIVERSITFICATION

We recognize the importance of crop diversification and the demand for sustainable farming that respects the natural ecosystem and protects plant biodiversity. Climate change is a major factor in biodiversity loss, so we follow key guidelines for crop diversity to mitigate the effects of climate change and loss of biodiversity.

PRESERVATION

Our farm is located within the Monti Sicani Biological Preserve. We preserve ancient varietals and uphold traditional practices passed down through generations of Sicilian artisans. Our relationship with the Biopreserve is symbiotic. Our farm contributes to the energy and biodiversity of the preserve, while the preserve enhances the fruits of our farm.

MINDFUL JOB CREATION

Our farm has brought economic vitality to an area needing sustained employment. Historically, Sicily has faced challenging financial hardship as one of Italy's poorest states with the highest unemployment rate. La Furtuna Farm provides consistent employment for direct employees who work to preserve the land and create the highest quality products for which we are known and loved.
