The Best Skincare Routine for Your 30s

Let’s face it, you can always list things you probably shouldn’t be doing in your 30s (obsessing over toxic exes, maybe) but let’s think about what you should be doing. One of those should be’s is taking better care of your skin.

In your 30s, your skin begins to change, and your skincare needs to change, too. Establishing healthy skincare habits now will set you up for a lifetime of luminosity and keep your skin looking as youthful as possible.

The team at Furtuna Skin put together this guide to help you understand what’s happening to your skin in your third decade of life, what your skin needs, and how to take care of it.

What Happens When Your Skin Turns 30?

One day you notice it; a fine line here, a little sunspot there. Maybe it’s an overall lack of radiance. Your once healthy, hydrated skin has begun to look dull and maybe even unwell.

This happens naturally due to a decrease in cellular turnover and collagen production.

Cell Turnover

Skin is constantly renewing. New skin cells mean younger-looking skin. The problem is the rate at which skin cells renew slows down as we get older. In children, skin cells may only take 7 to 10 days to renew completely. As adults in our 30s, that process can take over a month.

Collagen Production

Collagen is what keeps skin looking plump and feeling firm. When collagen production begins to slow down, our skin begins to look hollow. It also starts showing fine lines and wrinkles.

We lose about 1% of collagen production per year after the age of 20, which means by age 30, we’re now producing 10% less collagen.

Free Radical Damage

If the natural aging process wasn’t enough to make you jump head-first into a new skincare routine, understanding free radical damage might do the trick.

Free radicals are unbalanced molecules that are emitted from the sun, urban pollution, cigarette smoke, cleaning chemicals, and other sources. It’s impossible to avoid them, and they can rob your skin of its youth, damage it, and age it faster than it normally would normally age on its own.

Free radical damage can look like skin that has lost elasticity, is dull or lackluster, or has dark spots or areas of uneven skin tone. All of this adds up to premature aging or skin that looks older than its birthday.

To protect your skin, you need antioxidants. Antioxidants work by protecting your healthy skin cells from free radicals, so you can avoid free radical damage and keep your skin safe from early signs of aging.

Is 30 Too Late for Skincare?

No age is ever “too late” for skin care. In fact, each age has its own specific skin care needs. In your 20’s, your focus may have been preventing breakouts or oil control. In your 50’s and 60’s, your focus will likely switch to deeper hydration.

In your 30s, we begin to focus our skincare on anti-aging and practicing good skin health habits that will help keep your skin healthy for life. The most important rule for practicing better, healthier skincare? Go to the land, not the lab, for your ingredients.

The Best Natural Based Skincare Routine for Your 30s

For effective ingredients that are gentle on your skin and help protect its delicate pH balance, there’s no solution better than plant botanicals.

At Furtuna Skin, we have an entire team of experts (from biologists to dermatologists) that help us create the most natural, beneficial skincare products. Here, we’ll share our favorites for keeping 30-something skin supple and radiant.

1. Eye Care

One of the first places you’ll begin to notice the signs of aging is the under-eye area. From puffiness and dark circles in the morning to crow’s feet that spring up seemingly out of nowhere, keeping the delicate skin around your eyes healthy will keep you looking youthful.

Furtuna Skin makes eye care easy with our Eye Revitalizing Cream with active ingredients like olive leaf water and hyaluronic acid. Our revolutionary use of lilac stem cells helps eliminate puffiness and evens out five types of discoloration. Our ophthalmologist-tested formula is clinically proven to deliver brightening benefits to the skin and help hydrate and plump the skin around the eyes with wild nigella damascena, a plant rich in polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin E, and skin-essential fatty acids.

It’s quite possibly the only eye cream you’ll ever need.

2. Clean Up Your Cleansing

In your 20s, cleansing your skin usually meant stripping your skin of essential moisture in an effort to control breakouts and blemishes. In your 30s, moisture is important, and using a cleanser that nourishes and protects will keep your skin better balanced.

Furtuna Skin Micellar Cleansing Essence is a triple-duty product that works as a cleanser, toner, and essence. Our essence features our Splendore Anchusa® Complex, clinically proven to block free radical damage by 100%. An effective and gentle cleanser for all skin types, it helps by gently exfoliating dead skin cells and protecting the skin barrier by balancing your skin’s natural pH levels.

This tri-use face wash digs deep into pores for effective cleansing and also helps nourish skin with a blend of five wild-foraged plants grown right on our private farm in Sicily.

3. Add Bakuchiol to Your Skincare Routine

It’s really never too early to start using skincare products that support a youthful-looking complexion. One of the most popular is retinol. Retinol works by increasing the speed of your skin cell turnover. However, it has a pretty significant Achilles heel.

Retinol can leave skin red, irritated, and rash-y. For sensitive skin types, it’s not uncommon to experience peeling and dryness. Thankfully, there’s a natural solution. Bakuchiol is a natural plant ingredient that delivers the benefits of retinol without the harsh side effects.

You can find it in our Nightly Renewal Cream. Formulated with bakuchiol, ashwagandha, and ceramides, this cream helps support skin renewal, restore moisture levels, and strengthen skin for results you can visually see overnight.

A night cream that acts like a retinoid without leaving you with dry skin? We’ll gladly wake up to that any day.

4. Get Serious About Sun Damage

Maybe you already wear a daily, broad-spectrum SPF, or maybe you’re still a little oblivious to the type of damage the sun can do to your skin. It goes without saying that UV rays are a source of skin cancer, but they’re also a source of pigment issues and early aging.

In addition to an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, antioxidants offer sun protection to keep your skin shielded from free radicals.

Furtuna Skin’s Biphase Moisturizing Oil contains more antioxidant protection than vitamin C, one of nature’s most potent free-radical fighters. Our Anchusa Splendore® Complex is proven to block free radicals by 100%. Combined with our 360° Exposome Defense® Complex, our Biphase Moisturizing Oil helps protect skin against urban pollution, digital blue light, and UV radiation.

5. Protect Skin Texture

Skin texture changes are normal as you age, but with the right ingredients, you may be able to avoid rough, dry patches of skin. Your skin needs a blend of emollients and humectants to keep it soft, supple, and smooth.

You’ll find them, along with fast-acting, wild-foraged plant botanicals and our award-winning, single-origin, skin quenching olive-oil in the Furtuna skin Transformation Set, the easiest way to start taking care of your skin in your 30’s and set up habits that last a lifetime in three, uncomplicated products.
