HISTORY OF OILS
Botanical oils have exploded in clean beauty lately because they impart such a naturally dewy glow. But these elixirs haven’t just been trending for the last several months, they’ve been sought after for several thousands of years by ancient royalty, haute society, philosophers and physicians. Wealthy Egyptians used natural plant oils as a beauty treatment to prevent wrinkles and preserve youth. In Cleopatra’s day, anointing the body with oil was a way to protect skin against the scorching sun. The queen’s own beauty ritual included oils to silken her skin. Pliny the Elder, a great Roman philosopher, touted oils as a wrinkle treatment and Galen, an early Greek physician, made the world’s first cold cream with olive oil, beeswax, and rosewater.
WHY USE A FACIAL OIL?
A facial oil is for anyone seeking a radiant, well-nourished complexion. Every skin type, including oily and especially dry, can benefit from incorporating a facial oil into their skincare routine.
Simplicity meets efficacy. In the natural skincare world, facial oils tend to be made with a blend of botanical oils or just a single one. Since it’s an undiluted waterless formulation, made with just a few simple ingredients, it’s less likely to trigger sensitivities and require preservatives. It may be simple but it’s also luxuriously concentrated with nourishing botanical oils, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and other valuable nutrients for skin.
WHAT DO OILS DO FOR SKIN?
Let’s delve into the science to understand how oils work. Facial oils are anhydrous or waterless and emollient and occlusive in nature. Dripping with benefits, oils nourish, smooth, condition and lubricate skin. They act as a sealant, forming a protective lipid barrier on skin to help keep moisture in. Because oils are lipophilic, or fat loving, they can easily pass through the lipid layer of the skin to prevent water loss and plump skin effectively.
Facial oils restore lipids and essential fatty acids that can get stripped during washing. Lipids are produced by cells in the stratum corneum, the outer layer of skin that serves as its protection against water loss. By maintaining stratum corneum lipids and replenishing fatty acids, oils minimize water loss and maximize barrier function. They seal in hydration and prevent the environment from depleting skin of water. They also help strengthen and repair this outermost layer to boost skin’s ability to protect itself against irritation, redness and environmental toxins.
Botanical plant oils are rich in powerful nutrients and vitamins that give skin extra nourishment, restore a healthy glow and encourage cellular renewal. They are packed with potent antioxidants that protect against environmental damage and pollutants. And many plant oils also have anti-inflammatory properties that soothe inflammation.
IS MOISTURIZING A MYTH?
Oils nourish, correct and protect but the one thing that can’t do is moisturize. You need water to moisturize and oils do not contain water, add water, draw water or encourage skin to absorb water as a humectant does. Oils provide an occlusive layer to seal in moisture that is already there and prevent it from escaping for longer-lasting benefits.
HOW TO APPLY A FACIAL OIL?
Facial oils are designed to complement and enhance the performance of serums and creams. Layered over these other skincare products, oils help seal in moisture and act as a barrier of protection on the skin surface.
Save your oil for the last layer of your skincare routine, after serums and creams. They are the perfect finish. We recommend applying a facial oil both morning and night, using our gentle massage technique to get your microcirculation going and skin glowing. Oils have a luxurious silky glide that allow you to give yourself relaxing facial massage. Warm drops in your fingertips and massage gently into skin, using a circular motion, starting from the center of your forehead and working down, following the lymphatic pathways. Take extra care around the delicate eye area. Repeat until absorbed.
