Let’s rewind to a few years back, when during the first phase of research and development. We began to uncover the wealth of wild flowers and herbs on our organic La Furtuna Farm in Sicily. As co-founder Kim Walls searched the plant databases for the nutritional and antioxidant content of our Farm botanicals, she discovered that their phyto-chemical profiles boasted some of the highest levels of antioxidants, nutrients and vitamins of any wild edible Mediterranean plants.
THE TEST OF TIME
After endless conversations with our resident botanist Mimmo, Kim learned that these plants came from an ancient lineage and had long histories of medicinal use. They have been coveted for their healing powers over the centuries. Throughout the evolutionary history of Sicilian plant life, our wild botanicals had to fend for themselves in an extremely harsh environment without human intervention. From the start of Furtuna Skin, we set out to establish the potency of our Extremophyte™ plants through lab-testing and research. Once we understood the exceptional nutrients and antioxidant levels that our wild organic botanicals held, we took elaborate measures to protect the integrity of these ingredients through processing and beyond. We searched relentlessly for a method that would gently and quickly extract the max nutrients without damage. Our quest led us to the Soundbath™ extraction, a green technique that utilizes the energies of sound and low temperatures to capture the full potency of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants -- without high heat, harsh solvents or extended processing times.
TESTING THE LIMITS
When it comes to testing results, we do whatever it takes to ensure certainty. The clean beauty industry, especially in the natural and organic space, usually formulate with ingredients that were first consumed as food, so most of the antioxidant testing and knowledge comes from food-based clinical tests. The standard rating embraced by many skincare companies is ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), a food-based scoring system that measures the ability of an ingredient to quench free radicals. However, what works best in the digestive system may or may not work best when applied to skin.
While ORAC is an important body of research and data, especially when it comes to knowing the best antioxidant superfoods to eat, we’re driving the clean beauty movement forward by building on existing research with a state-of-the-art, skin-centric testing approach. We’ve partnered with a top laboratory in Princeton, New Jersey, to assess the antioxidant ability of our proprietary Soundbath™ infusion blends to protect skin against the harmful oxidizing effects of free radicals. Their innovative, cell-based method measures antioxidant potency in a way that is specific to skin and delivers results with precision. We are also working with two universities in Italy to evaluate the nutrient and antioxidant compositions of our individual plants.
